Dr. Ioannis Makariou is a specialist in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, trained at the prestigious Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK and awarded the European Diploma in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine. With extensive experience in the field, Dr. Makariou possesses a deep understanding of all aspects of pediatric respiratory, sleep and exercise medicine. 

''My academic journey began at the University of Athens Medical School, where I graduated with Honours ('Excellent'). Following this, I successfully completed my Paediatric Specialty training while obtaining a master's degree in Paediatric Infectious Diseases (Honours). In my pursuit of expanding my expertise, I have completed clinical placements in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at esteemed institutions such as Boston Children's Hospital in the USA and Schneider Children's Medical Centre in Israel. Subsequently, I specialized in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine in London and worked as a Senior Clinical Fellow at Evelina London Children's Hospital and then at Royal Brompton Hospital London, renowned for its world-class Paediatric Respiratory Department.

 

At Royal Brompton, I had specialist senior fellowship roles including Severe Asthma, Sleep and Non invasive ventilation, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing. I am experienced in the full range of tertiary paediatric respiratory medicine, including cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, congenital lung malformations and malignancies, neuromuscular diseases, central hypoventilation and acute lung disorders. I have developed a diverse set of skills, including the performance of flexible bronchoscopy, cardiorespiratory sleep studies, lung function testing such as spirometry, FeNO, FOT, Plethysmography. These tools have been invaluable in investigating respiratory conditions in children, aiding in accurate diagnoses and treatment planning.

My research in the field of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine (e.g post-COVID dyspnoea in children, FeNO and severe asthma, Breathing pattern disorders) has been presented at national and international conferences in Europe and USA and published at esteemed respiratory journals.

I am an active member of the Hellenic and British Paediatric Respiratory Societies, as well as the European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society and I currently hold an honorary fellowship with the Pediatric Respiratory Department at Royal Brompton Hospital staying at the forefront of advancements in my field and engaging with fellow experts, fostering a collaborative and supportive network.''
