Saharan Dust in Cyprus: Composition, Health Impacts on Children, and School Recommendations

Composition of Saharan Dust

Saharan dust is a complex mixture of various particles and substances. Studies have shown that it contains:

  • Minerals: Predominantly silicates (64%), sulfates (14%), quartz (6%), and high calcium particles (5%).

  • Metals: Elements such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), aluminum (Al), and copper (Cu).

  • Carbonaceous Materials: Including soot and other carbon-rich particles.

  • Biological Components: Microbial communities, including bacteria and fungi, which can be transported over long distances.

Health Impacts on Children

Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of Saharan dust due to their developing respiratory systems. Exposure can lead to:

  • Respiratory Issues: Increased incidence of asthma attacks, bronchitis, and other respiratory infections.

  • Inflammatory Responses: Inhalation of fine particles (PM2.5) can induce inflammation and oxidative stress in lung tissues.

  • Allergic Reactions: Exposure to microbial components in the dust can trigger allergic responses.

Recommendations for Schools and Caregivers

To mitigate the adverse effects of Saharan dust on children, the following measures are recommended:

  • Monitoring Air Quality: Schools should regularly check air quality indices and adjust outdoor activities accordingly.

  • Indoor Air Purification: Utilize air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters in classrooms to reduce indoor particulate levels.

  • Ventilation Management: Ensure proper ventilation systems are in place and functioning to maintain indoor air quality.

  • Protective Measures: Encourage the use of masks, especially for children with pre-existing respiratory conditions, during high dust periods.

  • Educational Initiatives: Inform students, staff, and parents about the risks associated with Saharan dust and the importance of adherence to protective measures.
